Braintree's Heritage Day Celebration will highlight the 200th Anniversary of Gen. Sylvanus Thayer assuming command of West Point. Retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Sherman Fleek, West Point's command historian will speak at 1:30pm. Thayer, an 1808 graduate of the academy, returned in 1817 as its Superintendent. During his sixteen year tenure, he introduced administrative and educational reforms and created a pre-eminent school of engineering and is known as "The Father of West Point".
