Annual Presidents' Day Family Winterfest
The City of Presidents will be celebrating the 3rd President’s Day Weekend Winter Festival, a free event for the whole family on Sunday February 2 PM to 7 PM at Hancock-Adams Common. . With outdoor interactive experiences, live music and special performances – including fire-eating and stilt walking – there is something for everyone.
The Hancock-Adams Common will be the place to be for indoor and outdoor fun, with various tents featuring bubble machines, UV lights to help kids glow, moving LED lights, and an LED Robot. As kids wait in lines they can have a free caricature done!
Take photos with characters including your favorite ice princesses, give her snowman friend a warm hug, or meet other beloved costumed characters.
A mobile unit featuring a model slot car track will be onsite, as well as a limited edition Boston Bruins dome hockey game, air hockey tables, and more.
In the spirit of Presidents Day, a large green screen will let you take photos with Quincy natives Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln, along with other beloved historical figures, superheroes, and Quincy greats like actress Lee Remick, whose dad owned Remick’s Department Store in the Center, and Howard Johnson, who started the famed chain in Quincy.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase at the Wahlburgers food truck, Montilio’s pizza oven and pastry truck, as well as at the Hive beer and wine truck.
Winterfest will heat up with a special fire show.
The Church of Presidents and Quincy City Hall will house multiple performances throughout the day. Soul Jacker, a modern Funk & Soul band, will perform from 4-7 pm. The Paradoxides Trio, made up of members of the Quincy Symphony Orchestra, will play music from The Great American Songbook, followed by the patriotic stylings of the 215th Army Band. The popular puppeteer and marionette group Behind the Mask will present “The Woman Who Outshone the Sun.”
In the case of rain or snow, the event will be moved to Monday, February 18th.
Behind the Mask Studio performs The Woman Who Outshone The Sun a puppet/marionette show: A beautiful and mysterious woman, connected deeply to the magic of nature, is exiled from a mountain village and takes its water source, the river with her. Through their suffering for what they have lost, the villagers learn important lessons of tolerance, forgiveness, and their impact on the ecosystem. The layers of teachings hidden in this beautiful folktale attune the audience to the cycles of nature, the messages of water, and the magical life that unfolds with living from the heart. Based on a poem inspired by a Zapotec folktale. Each show last approximately 45 minutes. Performances will be held at 2:00p.m., 3:30p.m. and 5:00p.m. in the Church of Presidents Back Chamber (use side entrance).
Tours of the Adams Crypt - Visit the Church of the Presidents from 2:00 - 7:00p.m.; the final resting place of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, and First Ladies Abigail and Louisa Catherine Adams; and view their memorial tablets, the baptismal record of President John Adams and sit in the pew of President John Quincy Adams.
Quincy Symphony Orchestra Ensemble: The Paradoxides Trio will play the music of Broadway and the Great American Songbook. Performances will be held at 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00p.m. in the First Floor Chambers of Old City Hall.
215th Army Band of the Massachusetts National Guard is one of the nation’s finest military quintets and will present traditional patriotic music they have performed throughout the world for more than 60 years. Performances will be held from 2:45 - 3:30p.m. and 4:15 - 5:00p.m. in the Main Sanctuary of the Church of Presidents.
Munk Duane & Soul Jacker mash up the old school spirit of artists like Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Prince and James Brown with the modern Funk & Soul of artists like Childish Gambino, Leon Bridges, Bruno Mars, and Amy Winehouse to deliver highly energetic and infectious interpretations of their beats to the dance floor. Soul Jacker consists of New England Music Award's 2018 MALE PERFORMER OF THE YEAR Munk Duane (vocals/guitar), Jim Gambino (keys), Edan Dayan (bass), Aaron Belyea (sax) and Mike Levesque (drums), a group of music industry veterans, uniquely qualified to bring the authenticity of the genre. The members have appeared in previous incarnations on the Late Night talk shows, performed with legends, such as David Bowie and had their compositions used in hundreds of television shows, from The 70th Annual Tony Awards to The Sopranos to the Super Bowl XLIV Half-Time Show. Performs from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. in the heated tent.
Sasha the Fire Gypsy is an incredible performer combining dance, choreography, theatrics, contortion, acrobatics, stilt walking, who specializes in mind blowing, and versatile fire theatrics. Performances at 4:30p.m., 5:30p.m., and 6:30p.m.
